Understanding back injury

Back injury attorney Juan Sanchez of The Olive Law Firm
Regardless of the cause, a back injury can be one of the most difficult injuries to diagnose and treat. To start with, it may look simple, but the back bone and spine is one of the most complicated systems in the body. To begin with, the spine is comprised of 33 bones and corresponding connective tissues extending from the skull to the pelvis. These bones are called vertebrae. Their role is to enclose and protect the bundle of nerve tissues known as the spinal cord. In between each of these vertebrae, is a soft pad commonly called a spinal disc. In function, it is a band of cartilage that serves as a shock absorber between the vertebrae. If you injure one of the vertebrae, discs, or the spinal cord; you will most likely experience debilitating pain, even to the point where it is impossible to work. Many people who have injured there back severely enough, are unable to perform regular daily activities, spend time with their family, or even sleep restfully. The reality is that it can go on for years, even with treatment.

Slipped discs

An accident lawyer can help with the subtle injury

Falling off unsafe scaffolding is an obvious workplace injury, but mesothelioma is a problem that demands an accident lawyer with extraordinary skill and experience. The main reason that mesothelioma cases require extraordinary effort and skill is because anywhere from 10 to 40 years can pass before the asbestos victim exhibits symptoms. There is no such thing as a safe level of asbestos exposure. Statistics show that in the two decades between 1980 and 2000, more than 9,000 people died from mesothelioma, a form of cancer that is associated with asbestos exposure. Every year, nearly 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States alone.

The use of asbestos

Asbestos is a microscopic fiber which is extracted from a common mineral. It was formally used in countless consumer products and for construction materials like ceiling and floor tiles or insulation. It was heavily utilized because of its strength and its fire and heat-resistant properties. Asbestos was known to be hazardous as far back as the early 20th century, yet many companies ignored the warnings and knowingly exposed their employees.

The American Cancer Society suggests that approximately 8 million Americans have been exposed to asbestos. When asbestos is disturbed, it becomes airborne, releasing dust-like particles. These fibers are breathed into the lungs and imbedded there. Asbestos fibers in the lungs can cause terrible, and even fatal, diseases. In addition, exposure to asbestos can also increase the risk of cancers in other organs such as the kidneys, stomach, and gallbladder.

Most victims of asbestosis or mesothelioma are people who were exposed to high concentrations of asbestos over extended periods. The industries and professions that have historically experienced a high incidence of asbestos related disease are construction trades, asbestos mines, asbestos manufacturers, shipbuilders, welders, and railroad employees. What seems to be forgotten or overlooked is that the children of people who worked in these industries may have been exposed to asbestos on their parent’s clothing. These same children are at risk for mesothelioma or asbestosis decades later.
